Moberg Fireplaces understands on a deep level that each custom architectural program goes beyond a set of functional requirements, technical space allocations and relationships. Programming holistically embodies the emotional and spiritual needs of the client, too: their dreams of a perfect building.
Though ideally we are called in early on fireplace programs, we are also sometimes asked to correct plans and solve problems for projects that have stalled, or are otherwise on tight deadlines.
We specialize in solving challenges that other firms are not prepared to address in architectural programming. Moberg Fireplaces is unequaled in our abilities to help professionals realize their client's dreams for their desired fireplace, however grand or unusual, yielding
significant fireplace programs.

In designing custom fireplaces, Moberg Fireplaces does not stop at specifying components such as the firebox, smoke chamber and damper. Nor do we merely supply drawings, plans, and sections. Moberg Fireplaces goes further to specify materials and how they should be incorporated into the final
complete fireplace solution. We frequently go beyond outdated standard masonry solutions, offering modern building materials such as insulated metal flue systems, and termination structures that can withstand any environmental conditions while supporting classic architectural aesthetics.
With our manufactured products, Moberg's specifications include all the components and options for the kit or system, which are frequently backed up with construction guidelines that clearly define all the other required materials and methods.

One of the benefits of leading more than 3,000 fireplace installations over the past 25 years is that Moberg Fireplaces enjoys worldwide professional affiliations with the best practitioners in structural and mechanical engineering, as well as the best metal craftsmen, stone masons, and other complementary professional services. Our affiliation with some of the finest testing laboratories in the world, like OMNI-Test Laboratories, Inc. of Beaverton, OR, allows us to advance the science of fireplaces to new heights. As the need arises, we can and do contract with the best professional services to meet the needs of our clients. The knowledge and experience of the Moberg team in fireplace building codes, standards, and testing requirements is unequaled among North American fireplace firms.
In addition to supporting standard programs, Moberg Fireplaces specializes in solving design challenges for fireplaces that - either in their size or scope of aesthetic and technical complexity - might perplex many architects, contractors and masons.
Our main goal is always to support the architect. The
design solutions we dictate yield functional fireplaces and the quality of fire that the architect's client wants to see. We can produce in CAD the construction documents and detail the materials and specifications it takes to build the architect's design intent, whether the vision is for one spectacular fireplace, or a mansion boasting a dozen or more separate hearths. Our approach is to help see to fruition safe, perfectly performing fireplaces.

When Moberg designs a fireplace, we do so within the architect's specific program, and within their drawings to the required scale. But we also go a step further to provide a holistic view of all the fireplace components. Moberg goes beyond drawings and material specifications to provide an overview of all that is entailed in the installation of the finished project - to assist in the conceptual incorporation of the complete fireplace into the building. Our specifications are unequaled in the industry for their accuracy and completeness.

If you send us drawings, Moberg is expert at identifying and circumventing difficulties in your existing fireplace plans, including design intent incompatibilities with proper fireplace system functioning. We offer workable solutions for existing problems with materials, insulation, fuel-loading, venting, penetrations and terminations. We detail construction in CAD drawings from all the necessary fireplace views. These details can be submitted separately or folded into architects' design and construction documents. In most cases, we can also supply the custom, functional materials.

Moberg Fireplaces designs and creates aesthetically pleasing, fully functional fireplaces based on the architect's unique design intent, regardless of the complexities. Consequently, many of the programs we have worked on in the past two decades are aesthetic and engineering fireplace marvels.
Modern custom fireplace design is extraordinarily demanding. Too often we see programs where internal elements, particularly in large fireplaces, are poorly placed for real-world operating conditions. Improper design may cause mantels and facings to crack, or smoke to spill into rooms. Moberg expands the architect's palette of available options for fully functional fireplaces. We also excel in working with unusual geometries and the newest technologies to accurately deliver perfectly functioning historical recreations.

In our modern world, many people accept that chimneys do not need to terminate directly above fireplaces. However, most modern direct-vent gas fireplaces have only the usual selection of firebox geometries. These drastically limit the presentation of the fire and only use gas-fired systems. Architectural desires for unusual firebox geometries challenge all conventional fireplace designs.
Moberg Fireplaces accomplishes the successful design of unusual fireplace elements by putting together geometries for fireboxes and for flues that do not strictly adhere to traditional designs, and their codes and listings.
We deal regularly with unusual firebox geometries, such as round and multi-sided fireboxes. No other firm matches our experience in designing, detailing and supervising the construction of fireplaces with unusual geometries.

Creative Venting Solutions

The complexity of proper fireplace venting is often underestimated. This accounts for the unfortunately large number of North American fireplaces that don't function properly.
Instead of putting together a group of pre-designed and often limiting components, Moberg Fireplaces first considers fuel load and exhaust system demands on a building. This often requires creative thinking. Moberg Fireplaces has a long track record of allowing for other building programs, including rooms, swimming pools, and elevator shafts that interfere with conventional smoke ventilation. That creative spirit, backed up by our training and experience, yields creative venting solutions that perfectly match even the most demanding architectural program.

Hidden Assemblies
Over the past decade, Moberg Fireplaces has found a solution to a long-standing problem in modern fireplace design: creating acceptable terminations.
Too often in recent decades, masons have capped chimneys with little informed consideration of good flashing and sealing, proper maintenance or the durability of the materials used. Many covered solutions, designed by architects, especially neglected the need for unrestricted flow of exhaust gases.
Moberg Fireplaces has developed integrated termination designs that allow for the correct maintenance of flues over the lifetime of the building, maintain the durability of all components, and provide protection from back pressure, winds and heavy rains. We help our clients avoid the kinds of dysfunctional constructions and operations that destroy fireplaces and fireplace operations.

Moberg Fireplaces simplifies fireplace appearances and achieves desired effects by integrating many necessary, but often uncommon "invisible" fireplace elements.
What we must do behind the scenes, to allow specific mantelpiece and firebox positioning, or unusual chimney venting, is frequently technically sophisticated. This may entail shaping, cooling, insulating and ventilating the environment for the gases of the fireplace, or it may require construction of a multi-faceted, technologically advanced skeleton that will allow the surface to express the architect's desire.
More than any other firm, Moberg Fireplaces routinely and successfully handles these kinds of difficult requests to deliver sophisticated fireplace assemblies.

Swedish Kakelugns--The tiled masonry heater has played an important part in the European way of life for more than five hundred years. The Swedish Cronspisen (pronounced "krone-spee-sun") is among the world's finest wood-fired masonry heaters. Called "kakelugns," they are available in tiled or stucco models, and manufactured in pre-engineered components assembled on-site by factory-trained masons. Elegantly simple, with classic lines, they are at home in virtually any decor.
Radiant, stored heat from a kakelugn is perhaps its most special benefit. Accumulated heat is released up to 24 hours after the fire is out as gentle, continuous warmth. Independent laboratory tests in Europe and the U.S. confirm overall efficiency of Cronspisen products to be 70-85%, with combustion efficiency approaching 95%. This astonishing performance is achieved without expensive catalytic combustors that must be periodically replaced. Particulate emissions (smoke) are also extremely low, with levels several times lower than even EPA-certified metal woodstoves.
English Inserts--Stovax Classic Fireplaces reflect the elegance of the Victorian Era through decorative cast ironwork fireplaces that are faithfully reproduced down to the last detail from 19th century originals. Each Stovax fireplace is an individual masterpiece, hand-cast and finished in exactly the same way as the Victorian originals, with a wealth of intricate decorative detail.
Stovax has carefully selected its fireplace inserts to reflect the development of the cast iron insert fireplace, from the elegance of the Regency period to the exuberance of art nouveau. Whether you are choosing a fireplace to restore a Victorian home to its original glory or improving a modern one, there will be a Stovax Classic Fireplace to meet your precise needs.

Moberg Fireplaces is a specialist in the reconstruction of fireplaces according to their historic examples. We are adept at the reconstruction of American fireplaces built over the past 350 years, and European fireplaces built over a 1,000-year history.
Moberg restores modern-day understanding in the construction of classic fireplaces with a variety of custom programs to assist architects and their clients in the final realization of classical solutions. We identify, specify and source original antique mantelpieces and reline fireboxes with cast iron according to the motifs and the functional geometries of European antiquity. We also import selections of traditional fireplaces manufactured to emulate original historic designs - including Swedish tile stoves (Kakelugns), and English cast iron inserts.

In fabricating custom gas log gratings, Moberg Fireplaces often marries modern technologies with traditional aesthetics to offer an uncommon variety of design choices. We routinely refurbish traditional and antique gas log gratings and build new gratings to look like antiques. In designing the finest wood-burning grates, options include incorporating gas systems within the gratings themselves. Some gratings (originally intended for "real" fires) may be converted with electronic ignition to burn gas with simulated coal or log fires.

We are often asked to incorporate artistic elements in fire, using natural gas, to create abstract expressions of fireplaces. The design intent here is typically to push beyond conventional ideas of fireplace operations and appearances. It is a challenge requiring an artist's mind. To select and manipulate materials that architects, designers and clients might want to see and a fire-scientist's skill to sculpt the flames as well.
In designing custom gas-fired sculptures, we must also apply an experienced engineer's understanding to know what materials - the precise varieties of metal, stone, glass, or rock - will perform properly under super-heated conditions. Moberg Fireplaces' experts know how to make a flame burn safely around specific materials, in particular shapes, with exact flame colors, year after year. Decades of experience have informed us in the art and science of gas-fire sculpture. Our creations are some of the finest in the world.

One of the latest and most unique solutions Moberg Fireplaces offers for clients who want to light their wood burning fuel loads with the assistance of gas, are custom log-lighter gratings.
Unlike conventional log-lighting arrangements, the gas tubing that feeds the log-lighter is contained in the grating itself. These devices can be designed to either extinguish their gas flame manually or automatically once the combustible materials have been properly ignited. Special testing and listing is required in some jurisdictions for these remarkable log-lighter gratings, and Moberg Fireplaces is adept at leading architects and builders through the testing and listing requirements.

Custom gas fireplaces, before they are performance-tested by a UL-listed laboratory, are considered non-UL-listed gas appliances. Moberg Fireplaces, as a leading design expert, shepherds performance testing by recognized testing laboratories for each of our gas fireplace projects, so we can provide the architect and contractor with the documentation they need to obtain their permits.
We provide the equivalency that inspectors look for and that the codes allow, to ensure clients have a safe, tested and proven appliance. In the manufactured realm, Moberg creates standard model gas-fired gratings that are widely noted for their robust, wood-fired appearances. No ambience or effect, large or small, is beyond our reach.
Moberg Fireplaces is the leading North American firm offering services related specifically to the art of designing and fabricating fireplaces of distinction. As consultants to architects, builders and manufacturers, Moberg Fireplaces has specified successful fireplace designs from Barcelona to Hong Kong. A special expertise is the design and specification of very large fireplaces for hotels, lodges and private residences. Wherever there are challenging fireplace programs, Moberg Fireplaces has the experience and skill to develop successful solutions, from traditional wood-burning fireplaces to gas-fired sculptures.

Moberg Fireplaces constructs the essential functional components necessary to define the openings, throats, and smoke chambers of large fireplaces. Two prefabricated kits that we offer are for 6' to 10' wide openings. Because of the more complex aerodynamics with very large openings, they require special geometrical solutions. Moberg Fireplaces has uniquely well-engineered systems to balance the airflow across the opening of very large fireplaces and assure spill free operations as long as the chimney draft is maintained.

Among the key factors determining fireplace thermodynamics is the cumulative area of the opening, or openings, of an individual firebox. Dual-faced fireplaces have perplexed architects and builders for centuries. The rule-of-thumb equations for single-faced fireplaces simply do not apply when the same sized fuel load is placed in a firebox with two openings.
Moberg Fireplaces' unique design for a large 54" wide see-through system incorporates twin flues that can more easily penetrate most building structures, and electrical priming coils to compensate for the increased dilution air from double openings. The pre-heaters can also compensate for the taller chimneys needed with multi-faced fireboxes. Such technological considerations are critical to proper dual-faced fireplace operations.

While the Swedish fireplace of historic traditions incorporated an open-corner behind which a bake oven was usually placed, they were always supported by a metal post at the center of the viewing area.
Moberg Fireplaces has designed and fabricated a solution with a welded, cantilevered lintel that has no visual obstructions and allows a full 60" wide viewing area - including screens and optional ceramic glass doors. This open corner fireplace system is ideal for settings where both optimum viewing and greater efficiencies are desired.

Projected fireplaces are ancient in format. These entail fireboxes built against walls, with smoke hoods projecting into a room. The art of working in the design and installation of such projected fireplaces is largely lost in modern times, and absent from the vast majority of manufactured fireplace products.
Moberg Fireplaces' projected fireplace solutions incorporate insulated chimney breasts and smoke plenums that can be bolted to reinforced structural stem walls. These may then be veneered with virtually any traditional or contemporary material to recreate an ancient or modern projected fireplace program.

Moberg Fireplaces has designed custom steel frames to support 18th century mantelpieces and their inner cast iron fireboxes, in order to adapt traditional materials into modern fireboxes. However, each of these frame systems is typically unique. (By viewing the section Classical Fireplace Reconstruction, you may see examples of some custom solutions.)
With the Moberg Fireplaces' manufactured-solution shown here, we focus on a technologically superior fireplace kit that supports a centuries-old tradition. For our clients, Moberg Fireplaces has reconstructed soft limestone mantelpieces with modified openings for new homes. This particular kit system and its standard accessories incorporate the modification of an antique limestone mantelpiece, or the assembly of new, original components that describe a 54-inch-wide and 52-inch-high opening. Unlike earlier construction methods - where limestone blocks were simply fitted into masonry walls - modern code requires that all walls have structural integrity independent of mantelpieces. Moberg Fireplaces' reconstructed antique stone mantel kits are created with such modern requirements in mind.

As an alternative to traditional decorative stone pieces, many modernist and post-modernist architects have created fireplaces that incorporate openings very much like window penetrations in modern surfaces. These firebox windows require special support, such as that provided by the Moberg Fireplace-created frame system. The system will support half-inch-thick bronze plates, up to 6-inches deep, across opening widths as large as 10 feet and accommodate the inevitable expansion and contraction present in a fireplace without distortion. Two different large bronze surround kits in the Moberg Fireplace program cover openings ranging from 6-feet to 10-feet wide

Moberg Fireplaces designs and fabricates fully functional fireplace kit systems for an uncommon array of architectural applications. We are unrivaled in our incorporation of very large single-face fireplaces, dual-face fireplaces, open-cornered hearths and projected fireplaces, as well as reconstructed antique stone mantles.
Our fabricated solutions provide the basic "skeleton" around which the masonry fireplace is built. We provide an aerobic base, the firebox frame, smoke chamber and refractory chimney breast, and specify or provide flue systems and terminations. Each Moberg "kit" facilitates building a cleaner-burning, true masonry fireplace. Built on-site to our exacting specifications and guidelines, a Moberg kit system, wrapped in its masonry surroundings, is guaranteed for the life of the home.

The Modern Rumford" Kit uses a precise, 21st century laser-cut steel framework to enable today's masons to properly construct the modern equivalent of a classic, 18th century wood-burning fireplace. The unique physical guidance of the Modern Rumford kit assures proper construction, proportions, and successful performance. Deeper fireboxes work well with "real-world" gratings. The aesthetic beauty of a Modern Rumford, finished with the facing and mantel of personal preference, assures client satisfaction. The kits come in fire-viewing sizes from 36" wide to 96" wide. Tested and proven to be much cleaner than traditional masonry fireplaces, Modern Rumford fireplaces are certified in Washington State, Colorado, and California.
Features & Construction
Any competent mason can easily assemble a Modern Rumford(TM) Kit. The 8-piece heavy steel skeleton of the kit, laser-cut to exact dimensions, bolts together to guide the complete internal construction of the masonry. No more complicated measurements or "guesstimates" by the mason are necessary with the Modern Rumford. The mason simply lays brick and block up against the insulated metal framework. Optional gas connections for lighters or log systems are built-in. Other key elements that make the Modern Rumford unique and "smokeless" include the curved refractory breast blocks, modulating damper controls, universal butterfly damper, aerodynamic steel smoke chamber, and firebox frame, base pan with built-in air-wash, and outside combustion air intake. Level One systems are designed to burn "open", with screens, and even cleaner burning Level Two systems have premium full-view glass doors.

The Moberg MRC(TM) line sets the standard in North America for modern, clean-burning all masonry fireplaces. These permanent masonry kits of exceptional beauty are engineered to exceed the strictest EPA requirements for wood burning particulate emissions. With the largest fire viewing areas in the ultra-clean-burning fireplace market (42"), Moberg Fireplaces are also large enough to provide substantial supplemental home heating. Aesthetically, the options for finish material are up to the architect, interior designer, and homeowner: brick, stone, tile . . . you decide.
Features & Construction
The MRC's(TM) pre-engineered 9-course block system assembles easily, usually in one day to form a modern heat-storing "masonry heater." Yet the end product is also a permanent masonry "fireplace" with a full-view opening, that will last the lifetime of the home in which it is installed. Elements of the MRC include: the heavy cast iron grate, air supply damper controls and bypass damper controls, an effective air-washed glass door system, optional seismic reinforcement, an efficient air intake and air distribution system, internal heat exchange channels, top-vented chimney, and a gas line connection for optional natural gas log set or gas fire-starting.

For those clients who want to come as close to a wood-burning fireplace in look and feel while enjoying all the advantages of gas, Moberg Fireplaces has created the Lodge Series Log Systems. These are the ultimate gas-fired systems, with traditional gratings, finely laid logs, and realistic flames - designed for high-output programs and robust fires.
Designed specifically to fit inside Moberg Fireplaces' efficient Modern Rumford masonry fireplaces in 26" to 46" widths, they fit firebox openings from 36" to 72" wide. The Lodge Series products will also fit most fireboxes in a similar size range. Complete custom systems for unique applications are also available through design arrangements with us. One of our more remarkable installations may be seen at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, in Anaheim, California - where a 46" wide Lodge Series burns around the clock in a 60" wide custom Moberg Fireplace.
With their intricate burner systems fired among the logs, flames on the series systems rise as much as 30", encircling the logs as if they were truly on fire. These modern, electronically controlled gas log systems offer life-time gratings and burners, and exceptional performance for masonry fireplaces.

In contrast to our very large and robust gas log series gratings, we have designed an ultra-refined system to support traditional classical programs allowing the use of original antique andirons, firedogs and fenders and creating functional gas fire gratings with superior aesthetics and performance. These are available with three different levels of performance capabilities.
The Georgian Series grating is an antiqued heavy steel cradle that emulates original Adams-era architecture. Unlike the original 18th century gratings that typically burned coal, or contemporary models that simulate coal burning, the Moberg Fireplaces system is designed to use small ultra-realistic refractory logs engulfed in flame by three separately controlled burner systems carefully hidden within the grating and within the simulated coal bed beneath the grating.
In its highest performance level, the Georgian Series is capable of programmable operation where - with the touch of a button or remote switch - a realistic fire sequence is executed. It starts with a small fire, growing in magnificence, and finishing with glowing coals that diminish into ashes. These real fires, ebbing and flowing in the Georgian Series, will please the most discerning customers.

Moberg Fireplace's range of stone linings include soapstone, terra cotta tiles and Ankar stone. Soapstone has been long recognized for its strength, exceptional heat energy storage, and outstanding natural beauty. Our renowned Modern Rumford fireplace series features soapstone firebrick (available in sawn or beveled edges). We offer custom soapstone firebrick in many sizes and styles. Antique terra cotta tiles are sawn from lovely pavers recovered from homesteads and farms throughout the French countryside - offering a unique firebox palette ranging from butter yellow to faded salmon, or deep rose. Finally, our Ankar stone, from the islands of Indonesia, is volcanic, high-heat tolerant, with a deep green-gray color that makes an excellent alternative to the more conventional yellow firebrick. Finally, in cooperation with renowned ceramicist Ruth Greenburg, we offer a wide selection of high-temperature tiles, appropriate for inner-firebox applications.

Philosophy
624bg.jpg
The art of designing and building for fire - well known in antiquity - has been displaced in modern times. Our shift to specialization and the advent of new fuels and building techniques has changed fireplace programs. Fireplaces no longer dominate buildings and are frequently ill suited for venting with traditional masonry flues. Chimneys are relegated to chases and exterior walls, and often poorly configured. "Fireplace" is now synonymous with "smoky and cold".
However, today's architects and homeowners still desire the glow and beauty of true masonry fireplaces at the center of the buildings they design and where they live. Moberg Fireplaces is committed to using modern materials and technology to restore the noble nature and functionality of the fireplace to its original stature, and preserve the fire's place in architecture.
101
Our Clients
634f.jpg
Each design professional who comes to Moberg Fireplaces has a personal interest in making fire an integral element of the building they craft. Moberg clients are often architects involved in significant architectural programs for discerning owners. The grand or unusual design intents of these projects present unique problem-solving dilemmas that we welcome, and for which we are singularly equipped to provide solutions. Ultimately, we are committed to providing the highest level of service for everyone engaged in realizing these solutions-the builder, the designer and, of course the fireplace enthusiast whose hearth we warm.
